Meta’s decision to remove end-to-end encryption from Instagram DMs has sparked a wide-ranging debate. The change, announced quietly on Meta’s help page, takes effect on May 8, 2026. It represents one of the most notable privacy policy reversals in the platform’s history.
The feature was never universally embraced by Instagram users. When it was introduced in 2023, it was offered on an opt-in basis, and very few people chose to enable it. Meta says this low uptake is the reason it has decided to retire the feature, though critics dispute this explanation.
Once the change takes effect, Instagram messages will be fully accessible to Meta. This includes messages between users who had previously chosen encryption, who will now lose that protection. The move essentially brings Instagram in line with how most of its competitors handle private messages.
