Amid ongoing tensions with Iran, U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Americans to accept a slight increase in gasoline prices as a necessary measure to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. During a rally in New York, Trump emphasized that the modest rise in fuel costs is a worthwhile trade-off given the circumstances surrounding the disruption of shipping through the crucial Strait of Hormuz. He even suggested the possibility of declaring the strait as “a territory of the United States” after overcoming Iran.
Iranian officials have dismissed Trump’s assertions, maintaining control over the Strait of Hormuz. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated that Iran would uphold the blockade until the U.S. acknowledges what he termed as its defeat. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi indicated that Tehran has not yet opted to resume talks with the U.S. and that the resumption of shipping activities through the strait is contingent upon the U.S. meeting Iran’s conditions.
The ongoing standoff has significantly affected tanker movement through the strait, a vital artery for the global shipment of oil and natural gas. This disruption has contributed to a rise in crude oil prices and has subsequently increased pressure on fuel costs. Consumers in the U.S. are witnessing gasoline prices averaging around $4.08 per gallon, marking a 29% increase compared to the previous year. Brent crude prices are also experiencing a noticeable weekly surge.
The economic repercussions are being felt on both sides. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian attributes the growing inflation within Iran to the U.S. blockade, coupled with sanctions and restrictions on Iranian oil exports. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has hinted at imposing further financial measures against Tehran as diplomatic efforts to negotiate a ceasefire remain at an impasse.
