In the second quarter, Trump Media & Technology Group, which operates the social media platform Truth Social, reported a substantial loss of $238 million. This financial downturn occurred as the company redirected its strategic efforts towards its core social media operations, having previously ventured into cryptocurrency and other areas.
Despite the losses, the company saw a notable increase in revenue, bringing in $1.7 million during the quarter, which is more than twice the amount it earned in the same period last year. Under the leadership of its new CEO, Kevin McGurn, Trump Media aims to focus its resources on strengthening its social media business. However, it will still pursue some projects, such as its proposed merger with the nuclear fusion company TAE Technologies.
In a bid to enhance its offerings, Trump Media introduced Truth API, a subscription-based service designed for financial firms. This service grants early access to posts from former President Trump and other significant users of Truth Social. With subscription fees ranging from $60,000 to $100,000 per month, the service has already secured 10 customers, mostly high-frequency trading firms.
At the close of the quarter, Trump Media was equipped with more than $400 million in cash and short-term investments, in addition to holding around $1.2 billion in bitcoin and related assets. The company also carries approximately $1 billion in debt through convertible notes, which are set to mature in 2028.
